The Assembly Tourism and Gaming Committee would discuss the bill on Thursday.
The sports betting legislation offer comes after State Police revealed a sports betting operation that was allegedly connected to a crime organization. Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, the committee chairman, said that this sports betting investigation proves why sports gambling has to be legal in Atlantic City casinos.
According to the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, sports betting is allowed only in the states of Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana. In 1992, New Jersey had an opportunity to pass a constitutional amendment approving sports betting until Jan 1994, but it did not make any move.
