Malaysian police led by the federal criminal investigations police director are coming down hard on illegal gambling dens in a move to rid themselves of this plague on their society.
According to the director “These dens are causing citizens to build up great debt with the organized crime syndicates in
Kuala Lumpur, and are also causing a rise in the number of reported cases of gambling addiction.”
One raid on an underground casino led to the confiscation of 250 gambling machines and more then a dozen arrests and this casino was less then a 5 minute walk from a police station. The towns officials were reprimanded and police officials were suspended for allowing this to take place right under their noses.
Police to do know how many of these illegal casinos exist but tips from citizens are reporting that many of remaining gambling dens have closed their doors due to fear of getting caught in the police net.
"The target is to shut down all outlets by the end of March," the director added "We believe there is a domino effect, there could have been thousands of outlets at one point, but we are confident that the number is now falling to a low level."
