Stranraer appears to be the favorite location for casino license in Dumfries and Galloway. Gretna was removed from the bid to allow the ferry town to become the preferred site for a gambling venue.
The licensing board committee believes Stranraer location on the seaside would be able to attract tourists from Northern Ireland. Gretna was removed from the bid from fear of competition with Stranraer.
UK government plans to give 17 casino licenses statewide. Local councilors agreed that Stranraer has the best chances to win the bid. They hope a casino in Dumfries and Galloway would benefit the local economy.
