Assembly Tourism and Gaming Committee discussed a bill that would allow sport books in Atlantic City casinos.
Two New Jersey lawmakers are promoting a bill to legalize sports betting in Atlantic City casinos. According to the federal law, sports gambling is permitted only in Delaware, Montana, Nevada and Oregon.
New Jersey had an opportunity to legalize sports gambling in 1994 but missed the deadline. Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, a Cape May Democrat who chairs the tourism committee said he believes the federal law can be changed if it will approved by state voters in a referendum.
The bill was discussed by the Assembly Tourism and Gaming Committee on February 23. According to the bill, the Casino Control Commission would regulate the sports betting.
Van Drew said that the investigation on the illegal New Jersey sports gambling ring proves that sports betting should be legalized.
