Democrat Scott Heidepriem and Republican Gene Abdallah, Two state senators from Sioux Falls, are working to propose SJR1, which is a constitutional amendment permitting law to permit new casinos to begin operations within the border of the states of South Dakota. If accepted by Law, the measure is likely to be worked on a statewide election.
Abdallah remarked "If we can change the Constitution, can you imagine anyone investing in the one in Iowa?” Their proposal will consists of a request for an amendment in the state’s Constitution in addition to a request for a statewide vote prior to having the gaming proceeds expanded to the Sioux Falls region.
In the past fall, the resident citizens in the Lyon County of Iowa voted to permit a $90 million golf course, casino and resort. The population of this area which is a few miles from the Sioux Falls area is the target attraction for the group behind the proposal.
The project is detained by the Iowa Gaming Commission, because they have decided not to accept any new requests or applications for building up new casinos until the survey researching the industrial trends there gets completed.
The survey is due this spring, per Glenn Anderson, which is the Lyon County's development director. If the Iowa Gaming Commission decides that gambling will be expanded in the Lyon County, it will take six more months before it will be able to act on the application.
